The Old Åkrafjord Road
A historic road along the steep fjord cliffs between Tjelmeland and Teigland. Construction began in 1937 and advanced during WWII when around 1,000 men worked on it. The engineering is remarkably high quality given the extreme terrain — sheer cliff faces dropping directly into the fjord. Bypassed when the Markhus Tunnel opened in 1995, it is now a scenic route for walking, cycling, or driving.

Dock, Fjæra
Public dock at Fjæra village, departure point for the Fjord Cruise MS Langfoss and kayak/canoe rentals. Also used by local boats.

Parking, Langfoss
Parking area at the Langfoss waterfall rest stop along E134. Short-term parking for viewing the waterfall, with kiosk and toilets available. Starting point for the Langfoss Stairs and Vardahaugen summit hike.

Dock, Teigland
Dock at Teigland, near Åkrafjordtunet. Convenient access point to the fjord for those staying at the micro cabins or apartments.

Åkrafjordtunet Grocery Store
Åkrafjordtunet Joker is a hybrid staffed/unstaffed grocery store open daily 7:00–23:00. Staffed Mon–Sat 9–18, Sun and holidays 10–18. Outside staffed hours, shop using the remote camera self-service system via the Joker app or bank card. Carries everyday groceries, fresh bread, local products, and basic supplies.

Dock, Markhus
Historic dock at the old trading post of Markhus, on the north shore of Åkrafjorden. Accessible via the old road outside the Markhus tunnel.

Åkrafjordtunet Tourist Information
The tourist information desk at Åkrafjordtunet provides local area maps, hiking trail information, brochures about attractions in the Åkrafjorden region, and booking assistance for activities such as fjord cruises and guided tours. Open during peak season, daily 10:00–18:00.

Parking, Gullruta
Parking area at Øvre Markhus, the trailhead for Gullruta and the marked path to Sandvasshytta DNT cabin. Parking fee: 60 NOK/day (cash or Vipps).

EV Charging Station
Fast-charging station for electric vehicles at Åkrafjordtunet, Teigland. Charge up while enjoying the café, grocery store, or nearby hiking trails.

Beach, Sandvika
A family-friendly beach between Etne and Skånevik with sandy shores, a large grass field, volleyball nets, picnic tables, toilets, and parking. Part of the Sunnhordland UNESCO Global Geopark. A great spot for swimming and relaxing on a sunny day.

Vardahaugen Summit, 650 masl
A challenging summit hike to the top of Langfoss waterfall at 640 metres. The old mountain pasture path zigzags up the steep northeastern side through pine forests, reaching the Vardahaugen viewpoint with panoramic views of the entire Åkrafjord, surrounding mountains, and Folgefonna glacier. Allow around 4 hours round trip.

The Postal Route Trail
A restored 19th-century postal route winding along the river through the dramatic Rullestadjuvet gorge. The trail features original stone walls and wooden bridges along the rock face, restored and reopened in 2009. It leads to Jettegrytene — Northern Europe's largest collection of glacial potholes, part of Sunnhordland UNESCO Global Geopark.

Folgefonna, 1662 masl
Norway's third-largest glacier complex, spanning approximately 207 km² across three plateau glaciers. Its highest point reaches 1,662 metres above sea level. Folgefonna National Park was established in 2005 to protect its unique alpine and coastal ecosystems. The glacier is dramatically visible from Åkrafjorden, with meltwater feeding streams and rivers that flow down to the fjord.

Alvaldsnuten, 1245 masl
A prominent mountain peak at 1,245 metres above sea level, visible from the Åkrafjorden area. The summit offers sweeping views over the fjord landscape, surrounding mountains, and Folgefonna glacier. A rewarding mountain hike for experienced hikers.

DNT Simlebu Trailhead
Starting point for the 7.9 km hike to Simlebu, the northernmost DNT cabin in the Etne mountains and the first stop on Gullruta. The self-service cabin has 36 beds and sits by a mountain lake with views of Bordalsnuten and down into Sørdalen toward Folgefonna glacier. Allow about 2.5 hours from Rullestad.

Beach, Rullestad
A sandy beach at Camp Åkrafjorden in Rullestad, at the innermost end of the fjord. A great spot for a refreshing swim surrounded by towering mountains and waterfalls. Easily accessible from the campsite.

Church, Fjæra
Fjæra kyrkje is a white timber long church built in 1891 in a neo-Gothic style. It serves the inner part of Etne municipality and is set in a scenic location near the fjord, surrounded by steep mountains and waterfalls.

Church, Åkra
Åkra kyrkje is a white timber long church built in 1895 in a neo-Gothic style, replacing an older medieval stave church. It seats approximately 250 people and features pointed-arch windows and a distinctive spire, set in the heart of Åkra village on the south shore of Åkrafjorden.

Rullestadvatnet Circuit Trail
A gentle 4.5 km circular trail around Rullestadvatnet lake, starting from Camp Åkrafjorden. The path has been widened and improved with new bridges, making it suitable for families. Along the route at Sagelvo river you can see the remains of a gate saw from 1805. Allow 1–1.5 hours.

Beach Volleyball Court
A sand volleyball court at Camp Åkrafjorden in Rullestad. Perfect for a game with friends or family while enjoying the dramatic fjord and mountain scenery. Free to use for campsite guests and visitors.

Åkrafjordtunet Café and Restaurant
The café and restaurant at Åkrafjordtunet is open daily 10:00–18:00 during peak season, with hot meals from 12:00. The menu features traditional Norwegian dishes including fish soup, open-faced sandwiches (smørbrød), locally sourced lamb, and home-baked cakes and pastries. Indoor and outdoor seating with fjord views.

Langfoss Stairs, viewpoint 350 masl
Newly built Sherpa stone steps leading from the Langfoss kiosk up to a viewpoint at 350 metres above sea level. Completed in 2024 by Nepali Sherpa stonemasons, the carefully placed steps reduce erosion and make the lower portion of the Langfoss hike more accessible. A shorter alternative to the full Vardahaugen summit, with impressive mid-height views of the waterfall and fjord.

Sauna at the Campsite
A wood-fired sauna right at Camp Åkrafjorden in Rullestad. Relax and warm up after a day of hiking, kayaking, or exploring Jettegrytene. The sauna is available for campsite guests and visitors — contact reception for availability and pricing.

Langfoss Kiosk
The kiosk at the Langfoss waterfall rest area sells snacks, ice cream, beverages, simple hot food, and local souvenirs. A convenient stop while viewing one of Norway's tallest waterfalls (612 m). Open during summer season, June through August.

Summer Café, Vannes
A seasonal beach café at Vannes NaturCamp, on the historic Ytre Vannes farmstead near Skånevik. Enjoy coffee, light meals, and snacks by the fjord, surrounded by nature. Open during summer, weather permitting.

Camp Åkrafjorden Café
The café at Camp Åkrafjorden serves drinks, ice cream, snacks, groceries and fresh baked goods. A cozy spot to refuel after exploring Langfoss, Jettegrytene or the surrounding trails. Open during reception hours.

Gullruta
Gullruta ("The Gold Route") is a 6-day, 81 km SignaTUR hiking trail through the Etne mountains, from Seljestad to Olalia. The route traverses lush green mountain valleys, birch forests, and peaks up to 1,400 metres, with views of Folgefonna glacier, waterfalls, and Viking burial mounds. Six self-service DNT cabins provide overnight stops along the way.

Via Ferrata Ingadalen
A family-friendly via ferrata route south of Fjæra, grade B/C. A 15-minute walk from the meeting point leads to the start of the climb, with views of Rullestad, Fjæra/Åkrafjorden, and Kyrkjeveggen. Duration: 2.5–3 hours at a child-friendly pace. Minimum age 6 years. All climbing equipment provided. Year-round, weather permitting.

Fjord Cruise MS Langfoss
An eco-certified fjord cruise departing from Fjæra Kai, sailing past steep mountains, remote farms, and the spectacular 612-metre Langfoss waterfall. In summer (June 20 – August 15), hourly departures from 12:00 to 17:00. Pre-booking required outside peak season. The crew collects fresh glacier water from the waterfall to serve guests on board.

Boat Rental for Fishing
Rent a rowing boat from Camp Åkrafjorden at Rullestad and fish on the fjord. A great way to combine a peaceful day on the water with fresh catches. Contact the campsite reception for prices and availability.

How to get here
From Bergen
From Bergen, you have several options to reach Åkrafjorden. You can drive, which takes approximately 2-3 hours depending on traffic and route. There is also a direct express boat (ferge) from Bergen to Skånevik kai. From Skånevik kai, you can continue your journey in Åkrafjorden by pickup and transport provided by us, just contact us and we will do our best to help you. Another option is to take a bus from Bergen to Haugesund and then transfer to a bus heading to Åkrafjorden.
From Stavanger
From Stavanger, you can take a direct bus to Haugesund, which is approximately a 2-hour journey. From Haugesund, you can either rent a car or take another bus to Åkrafjorden. Alternatively, you can drive from Stavanger to Åkrafjorden, which takes about 3-4 hours, depending on traffic and route. If you prefer a more scenic route, consider taking the ferry from Stavanger to Bergen and then driving to Åkrafjorden, which offers breathtaking views along the way.
From Oslo
If you're traveling from Oslo, you have a variety of transportation options to reach Åkrafjorden. You can take a scenic train journey to nearby cities like Bergen or Haugesund and then continue your journey by bus or car. Alternatively, you can opt for a direct flight to Bergen or Haugesund airports and then proceed to Åkrafjorden by road.
